Solar Net Meter vs Normal Meter: Best Guide (2025)

Understanding the Difference Between a Normal Energy Meter and a Solar Net Mete

When most homeowners in Erode and nearby areas plan to install a solar system, the first topic they get confused about is the difference between a normal energy meter and a solar net meter. This confusion is very common, especially among customers who want to install solar on one floor and use the same energy for another EB service connection.

In this blog, we clearly explain how a solar net meter works, why it is essential for on-grid solar systems, and how it benefits your home compared to a normal EB meter. This article is based on our educational YouTube video, created to help customers understand solar in simple terms.

What Is a Normal Energy Meter?

A normal energy meter, also called a unidirectional meter, can only measure one thing: how much electricity you consume from TNEB.

It does not measure:

  • Solar generation

  • Power sent back to the grid

  • Two-way flow of energy

This is why, in a normal meter setup, even if your solar system generates excess power, the meter cannot record it — resulting in energy wastage.

Normal meters are suitable only for homes without solar or for simple single-direction usage.

What Is a Solar Net Meter and How Net Meter Works?

A solar net meter is a bidirectional meter that measures both:

  1. Import – Power you take from the grid

  2. Export – Extra solar power you send back to the grid

This is the heart of how solar on-grid works in Tamil Nadu.

Why Net Meter Is Essential for Home Solar in Erode

When your solar system produces more electricity than your home needs, the extra power automatically flows back to TNEB. The solar net meter records this export, and TNEB adjusts your monthly bill based on Net = Import – Export.

For example:

  • You used 200 units from TNEB

  • You exported 150 units from solar

  • You pay only for 50 units

This is exactly why people installing on-grid solar in Erode, Karungalpalayam, Perundurai, Chithode, Bhavani, Kavundapadi, and Nasiyanur prefer net metering

Can One Solar System Be Used for Multiple EB Service Numbers?

Many customers ask us during installations:

“I will install the solar system on the first floor. Can I use the same power for the ground floor EB number?”

The answer is No, and here’s why:

  • Each EB connection has its own service number
  • Solar export must match the same service number
  • Cross-connection between different meters is illegal
  • TNEB will not approve net metering if mixing load occurs

A solar net meter solves this legally and efficiently — the solar system must be linked to the specific service number where it is installed.
